What is your favorite part about being a designer?

I love the actual design work – being in showrooms pulling materials that craft unique stories and finding creative solutions to design problems. The energy that comes from collaborating with my team is palpable on those days and this excitement shows in our client presentations.

Who or what would you cite as your most important influence?

I draw most of my inspiration from my travels, background in sculpture and printmaking, and an active interest in the art world. There is such a rich artistic history around the world that there are endless sources of inspiration across all cultures and time periods. A few artists that I continue to go back to for aesthetic inspiration are eclectically Piero Fornasetti, Louise Bourgeois, and Sandro Botticelli.

Can you tell us about your personal brand?

JZID is a client-oriented firm, providing a bespoke turnkey approach to design services. We strive to bring an imaginative blend of modern and classical influences to create elegant rooms that are enlivened with a fresh mixture of pattern, color, and texture. For all projects, I direct my team to create a design that balances my aesthetic vision with the lifestyle and needs of our clients.

What is your favorite color palette to work with?

We design using the full color wheel. All rooms need to have a good balance between warm and cool tones, saturated colors and neutrals, and variation in value. I will say that I do have some favorites; you can’t go wrong with blue velvet and a good Scandinavian-inspired green wall color is timeliness.

If you could travel back, what advice would you give yourself as you start this career?

My company turned 5-years-old last month so self-reflection is still fresh on my mind. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to document everything and assume nothing when it comes to specifying products and leading installers to implement the design. Since we do full-service large-scale remodels, my team and I oversee all aspects of the project. Success of our projects are contingent upon every installation detail being exactly as we planned. I’d recommend that designers who are first starting out, get their construction documentation and spec sheets organized and consistent.

On a lighter note, I would tell myself that there are no limits to what you can create through bespoke design.

What do you like most about DesignerInc?

Instead of reaching out to each vendor individually, DesignerInc gives me one platform where I can get pricing in one place. This is especially helpful when we have to furnish an entire home and the client wants to see multiple options.
