There are a lot of things I love about this time of year, but one of my favorites is checking out all the round ups and predictions for 2021. So I thought I would ask some of the designers from DesignerInc for some of their insights for the coming year. I asked a simple question, “What do you think is in, and out for the coming year?” Do you agree? We would love to hear from you in the comments below.
The first person I asked was Ashleigh Underwood from Ashleigh Underwood Home and Interior Design, who is based in Southern California.
What’s In:
Soft, Comfortable and natural fabrics, Sophisticated but usable, multifunctional spaces, great storage, pops of color, outdoor rooms, visual texture, vintage, global influences, ocean colors of blues teals and greens, wallpaper especially peel and stick, granny chic, I am seeing a lot of plaster wall tutorials on TikTok, Rattan and Wicker.
What’s Out:
Grey especially in the kitchen and in the wood floor finish color, shiplap, farmhouse style, all white interiors, Mid-Century modern furniture (god I hope!) and barn doors
The next is Rebekah Correll, who is an e-designer from Transparent Interiors who travels the world seeking inspiration for her remote clients.
What’s In:
Modern Cozy Cottage style with lots of soft neutrals and beige is back. People are wanting a modern, minimal, and clean aesthetic, but still cozy and comfortable.
What’s Out:
All grey walls (thank goodness) and farmhouse style. While little “rustic” accents are still hanging on – balancing with a more modern style is what is in.
For an East Coast perspective I reached out to Kylie Ponton of Ponton Interiors in Tampa Florida to get her feelings about trends for the coming year.
What’s In:
Natural textures and materials for area rugs – durable and long lasting, kid and pet friendly.
What’s Out:
Viscose area rugs. The sheen that everyone thought was so desirable is a nightmare for longevity and maintenance.
Well it looks like it’s going to be a big year for comfort and durability. Too bad if grey is your thing apparently! Our design experts are pretty consistent?
So what do I (your resident contrarian) think is in and out?
What’s In:
Decoration is back! Whether it’s the Grand Millennial style that has been promoted so much or the 80’s vibe that we are seeing in the stores. Think people are swinging away from austere interiors to a more layered and detailed design.
What’s Out:
I agree with our esteemed designers, monochromatic grey, and white schemes are finally starting to wane in popularity, so get ready to turn up the volume and enjoy the symphony.
